Prepping Your Home's HVAC Equipment for Storms

You may start to think that storm season is year around. Spring聽brings聽rain storms and tornadoes, while summer聽ushers in聽hurricane season.聽By the time聽the Atlantic hurricane season聽comes to a close聽in November,聽snowfalls聽are upon the north. The聽well-being聽of your family during聽dangerous聽storms should聽invariably be聽priority. Your聽outdoor air conditioning聽equipment should be聽placed聽on a concrete pad and properly聽anchored聽to聽keep聽the聽equipment聽from聽going airborne聽or washing away聽over the course of聽a storm. Stop the Surge

You can’t聽actually聽stop聽the surge that often聽occurs聽during a storm, but you can聽protect聽your聽heating and air conditioning聽equipment from it.聽Get聽a high-quality surge protector where any聽large聽appliances,聽a furnace for example, are plugged into a standard wall outlet, to automatically聽shut down聽your heating system if there’s聽an increase聽in the line voltage. This will help聽protect聽the electrical components in your聽heating and cooling聽equipment that the power surge could聽harm.聽Be sure never to聽touch any electrical components, and聽ask for聽professional聽help if you are not聽accustomed to聽using surge protectors properly.

Provide Cover

Your loved ones and you聽need to聽find聽shelter first and foremost, but if聽time allows,聽turn off聽your聽heating and cooling聽system and cover the聽outside equipment聽with a tarp.聽Before you turn your system聽back on after the storm,聽you must聽remove the tarp and聽remove聽any debris.

Once the storm is over,聽ensure聽the system is safe before聽turning your heating and cooling system back on.聽First,聽make sure聽there are no聽signals聽of damage and聽get rid of聽any debris聽from around the system.
