Things can get聽warm聽fast when your air conditioner won’t turn on in聽the U.S.. Thankfully,聽天美传媒 Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing聽is here to help you聽remain聽cool, even when your AC isn’t聽functioning聽properly. Here are eight聽typical聽reasons why your air conditioner won’t turn on and how to fix them.
1) Check the Thermostat
The聽possible聽explanation for your AC not turning on is a thermostat聽issue.聽Make sure聽your thermostat is on, set to “cool,” and that the temperature is set to a few degrees聽lower聽than the normal ambient temperature of your home. You聽will also sometimes聽need to replace the batteries. If that doesn’t聽take care of聽the issue, the temperature sensor in the thermostat聽may聽be inaccurate. A thermostat that can’t read the聽desired聽temperature could聽keep聽your air conditioner from turning on. Once you’ve聽discovered聽that the thermostat is聽faulty, it’s time to replace it. If you can’t decide on a thermostat that’s right for your residence,聽ask聽an Expert to help聽determine the best choice.
2) Check the Air Filter
Your air filter should be聽changed聽every聽30-60 days at minimum. You should change them more聽regularly聽depending on the number of pets and people living in your home,聽and聽the local air pollution levels聽surrounding聽your residence. A dirty air filter can聽restrict聽airflow, causing your air conditioner to freeze and not turn on.
If your air filter聽appears聽dirty or you can’t聽remember聽the last time you changed it, it’s time to聽install聽a new one. If your AC was frozen, wait for it to thaw after changing the filter before turning it back on.
3) Check the Circuit Breaker
Open the electrical panel inside your home and聽check聽to see if the circuit breaker connected to your air conditioner is tripped. You can identify if the breaker is tripped if the switch has聽shifted聽to the “OFF” position. To resolve this issue, simply flip the breaker so that it’s in the “ON” position.
If your AC continues to trip the breaker after聽correcting聽this issue, you聽may聽have a serious problem and should聽get in touch with聽the Experts at聽天美传媒 Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing聽to聽keep聽it from damaging your home or air conditioner.
4) Check the Indoor Shutoff Switch
Often mistaken for a light switch, if your AC won’t turn on, the indoor shutoff switch聽might聽have been flipped聽accidentally. These switches are聽typically聽located聽near your furnace, in a closet, crawl space or attic. Once you聽find聽the shutoff switch,聽check to see if聽it’s in the “OFF” position. If so,聽you'll need to聽turn it back on. It’s always a聽good聽idea to label this switch to聽keep聽anyone from mistakenly聽shifting聽it off.
5) Check the Outdoor Shutoff Switch
If you or someone else has recently聽repaired or maintained聽your air conditioner, they聽may聽have turned off the external shutoff switch as a safety precaution. First,聽identify聽the external shutoff switch, which should be near your AC unit. If the switch is in the “OFF” position,聽you'll need to聽flip it to allow your air conditioner to turn on.
6)聽Identify聽the AC’s Reset Button
When your air conditioner won’t turn on, it聽may聽simply need to be reset. Not all ACs have a reset button, so first聽verify聽if your unit does. If you can find the reset button,聽push聽it before聽trying聽to turn your AC on again. If you can’t聽find聽the reset button, manually reset your air conditioner by聽turning聽your thermostat off for five to 10 minutes before turning it back on again.
7) Inspect the AC for Ice Buildup
Look over聽the air conditioner for any聽ice聽buildup either on or inside the unit. If you聽find聽ice on your machine, you need to wait for it to聽melt聽before聽going聽to start the unit or you risk damaging the AC. Though there are聽various reasons聽you聽might聽see ice on your air conditioner, it’s always聽preferable聽to call聽天美传媒 Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing聽for a consultation to聽keep聽further damage from occurring.
8) Ensure the Condensate Drain Isn’t Clogged
If you don’t聽come across聽ice on the air conditioner, the condensate drain聽may聽be backed up. When clogged, your AC won’t turn on as a safety precaution. To resolve the issue,聽unclog聽the drain line聽with聽suction from a wet/dry vac.聽Check聽that you’ve聽fixed聽the blockage by pouring a small amount of clear water and watching it flow out. For聽serious聽clogs, it聽may聽be best to call the Experts.
