How a Heat Pump Cools Your Home
In聽the U.S.,聽heat pumps聽can be a popular聽option for heating and cooling聽your聽home.
They聽appear聽very similar to聽an聽air conditioner. In聽reality, they聽work聽in聽a nearly identical way聽during聽hot weather.聽Since they have聽a reversing valve, they can聽transfer聽warmth聽in the opposite direction as well as聽add comfort to聽your聽home聽when it's cold.
Not sure if you聽rely on聽a heat pump or an air conditioner?聽All you have to do is聽locate聽the model number on the outdoor unit and聽look it up聽online. If聽you find聽you聽use聽a heat pump, or you’re聽use聽installing聽one,聽discover聽how this HVAC聽equipment聽keeps聽houses聽residences.
How Heat Pumps聽work
Heat pumps聽have聽a refrigeration system聽similar to聽an air conditioner. Most can聽work聽like聽a聽ductless mini-split,聽since聽they can heat and cool. Heat pumps聽have聽an indoor evaporator coil and an outdoor condensing coil. Refrigerant is聽a nearly identical way聽through these coils to聽move聽warmth. The outdoor unit also聽extracts聽a compressor and is聽enclosed聽by metal fins that聽act聽as a heat sink to help聽move聽warmth聽properly.
Summertime Cooling
When your heat pump is cooling, the refrigerant聽starts聽in the evaporator coil. Air from聽inside the house聽is distributed聽over the coil, and the refrigerant聽removes聽warmth.聽Water聽in the air also condenses on the coil,聽dropping聽into the condensate pan below and聽moves聽away. The聽following聽cool聽air聽moves聽through the ductwork and back into your聽home.
Meanwhile, the refrigerant聽flows聽a compressor on its way to the outdoor coil. This聽concentrates聽the refrigerant,聽causing聽it to聽get hotter. As it聽flows聽through the condensing coil, the聽outside聽fan and metal fins help to聽emit聽heat to the聽outside. The refrigerant聽moves聽back聽indoors,聽passing聽through an expansion valve that聽chills聽it聽considerably,聽prepping聽it to聽begin聽the process聽from the beginning.
When your heat pump is聽replaced聽and maintained聽appropriately, you’ll聽enjoy聽efficient cooling聽on par with聽an energy-saving聽air conditioner.
Wintertime Heating
In heating mode, the heat exchange聽process聽happens聽the opposite way. By聽flowing聽in聽the opposite聽direction, refrigerant聽extracts聽heat from the outdoor air and聽vents聽it into your聽home聽to warm聽the inside.
Heat pumps聽operating聽in heating mode are most聽effective聽when the temperature聽is above聽freezing outside. If it聽gets聽too聽cold, a backup electric resistance heater聽starts聽to keep your聽home聽comfy, but your heating聽bills聽increase聽as a result.
Heat pumps聽work聽longer than furnaces聽since聽the air doesn’t聽significantly聽as聽heated. This helps聽maintain聽a more聽even聽indoor temperature.聽On top of that, because heat pumps聽flowing聽hot air聽rather than聽making聽it from a fuel source, they can聽work聽well above 100% efficiency.聽You should expect聽30Ð40% savings on your heating聽bills聽by聽getting聽a heat pump.
Schedule聽Heat Pump Installation or Service聽Now
Heat pumps are聽environmentally friendly聽and聽cost-effective. They聽are a substitute for聽the聽regular聽AC/furnace聽configuration聽and聽need聽the same amount of聽maintenance—one聽checkup聽in the spring and another in the fall.
